Adobe Photoshop CS4 occasionally contacts Abode's servers to download software patches, check for authenticity and report errors when the program has malfunctioned. While this service keeps your Adobe product up to date, your network administrator may request that you disable this service to protect the security of your business's network and the files stored on your computer.
Deactivate the Online Services and Service Update on 32-Bit Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 systems
1.Click 'Start' and type 'Regedit' in the 'Programs and Files' field to launch the registry editor.
2.Expand the 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE' entry and then expand the 'SOFTWARE' entry and select the 'Adobe' folder. Locate the string entry labeled 'AdobeOnlineDefault.' Double-click the string entry, which will launch a new window. Enter the number '0' (without quotations throughout the article) into the text field labeled 'Value Data' and click 'Ok.'
3.Navigate to the 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|SOFTWARE|Adobe|CSXSPreferences' folder and locate the string entry labeled 'UpdatesAllowed'. Double-click the string entry to launch the 'Edit String Value' window. Enter the number '0' into the text field labeled 'Value Data' and click 'Ok.' Locate and double-click the string labeled 'AdobeOnlineDefault' and enter the number '0' into the 'Edit String Value' window; then click 'Ok.'

3.Expand the selection to the 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|SOFTWARE|Wow6432Node|Adobe|CSXSPreferences' folder. Double-click the 'AdobeOnlineDefault' entry to launch the 'Edit String Value' window. Enter the number '0' into the text field labeled 'Value Data' and click 'Ok.' In the same folder, double-click the 'UpdatesAllowed' entry and enter the number '0' into the 'Edit String Value' window; then click 'Ok.'
Deactivate the Online Services and Service Update on Mac Systems
1.Launch Finder and open the 'Library' folder; then open the 'Preferences' folder.
2.Locate and open the 'Com.adobe.CSXSPreferences.plist' file with a property list editor application. Select 'Root' to view the sub-entries. Locate the 'AdobeOnlineDefault' and 'UpdatesAllowed' keys. Change the value of each key to '0'. Save and close the plist file.
3.Locate and open the 'Com.adobe.AdobeOnlineHelp.plist' file with the property list editor. Select 'Root' to view the sub-entries. Locate the 'AdobeOnlineDefault' key and change the value of the key to '0'. Save and close the plist file.
Tips
- You may prevent Adobe Photoshop from calling Adobe by installing it on a computer that is not connected to the Internet.
- If the 'AdobeOnlineDefault' string does not exist in the listed folders. Right-click the container-object, select 'New' then click 'String Value.' Name the string value 'AdobeOnlineDefault'.
- Mac users may add the 'AdobeOnlineDefault' or 'UpdatesAllowed' strings by selecting the Root object in the plist file and then clicking the 'Triangle' button. Click the 'New Child' button and name it as needed. Label the object class as 'String' and enter '0' in the value field.
Warnings
- Altering registry or plist files can drastically alter the manner in which your programs perform. If you are inexperienced in editing these types of files, you run the risk of corrupting your system.
- If you are successful in altering the registry or plist files, Adobe Photoshop will no longer receive critical updates or software patches.
